2nd Annual “One School, One Book”

Second Annual “One School, One Book” Beginning January 11th
Posted on 01/07/2021

We're proud to announce the start of our 2nd annual “One School, One Book” community read-along beginning Monday, January 11.  Families of each Finley Elementary School student are receiving a copy of The One and Only Ivan, a children’s novel by Katherine Applegate. This book distribution and subsequent community-wide read along is part of the One School, One Book program through the Read to Them® organization, which encourages parents to read aloud to their kids at home.

As with last year’s read-along, the 2021 One School, One Book program is led by Finley Elementary Librarian, Athena Pelly.

“Last year's ‘One School, One Book’ events were so well received that I'm super excited to be able to have them again this year,” Pelly says. “I think shared experiences are important for bonding and growing as families, a school, and a community. I'm glad that we can facilitate this and am sure many of us this year will be able to sympathize with Ivan and his feelings of loneliness and isolation.”

The entire Finley Elementary School will read The One and Only Ivan over the course of three weeks, beginning January 11.  The goal is to read a few chapters each day. In addition to the English copies every family will receive, Spanish- and Russian-speaking families in the English Language Learner (ELL) program will also receive copies of the book translated into the language spoken at home.

Videos of teachers, school staff, high school students, and other community members reading in both English and Spanish will also be available for families not comfortable or not able to read along at home. These videos will be posted to finleyreads.org.  At school, students will engage with the book through trivia read by Principal Pam Kinne over morning announcements.  Additionally, a variety of prizes will be given to winners each day, and Barnes & Noble has agreed to provide a grand prize as was done last year.
